Wilson Kids

Had a fun day of shooting my own kids.
I had been eyeing the colors on the walls outside of the Strong Museum in the city.
I thought it would be a great place to take some pics of the kids and they could play on the playground later. We did make a trip inside for a run on the marry go round. Here is a result of the day with Brooke, Chase and Cam

Here are the links to these pics on facebook.

Vacation Pics - The power of flash

We recently took a trip to Myrtle Beach. I brought some of my equipment with me to try and squeeze in a quick photo of the kids. Well it was quick! I like both natural and flash photography. I have figured out how to use both to my advantage. The advantage is high speed sync. Most on camera flashes do not have this. If you are ever in the market for a new flash I would suggest one that has the capability to do so. This allows the camera to shoot at high aperatures (giving that nice blurred background). With a high aperature during the day or early evening you will run into the case where your shutter speed will need to be higher than 1/250th. If not you will have a photograph that is totally blown out when trying to use flash. Here is where high speed sync plays a role. This enables you to shoot at both a high aperature and high shutter speed while producing short bursts of fill light to lift the shadows. The time of the shoot was around 6pm. The sun was heading down behind the hotel and it was during the golden hour of shooting.

Take a peek at what I mean.

First - Picture with no flash.

Second - Picture with flash and high speed sync.

Third - Finished copy with some tweaking for effect.
F/2.8 - should have gone with about f/4

Happy Late Valentines Days!

Happy Belated Valentines :)

Here is a picture of our little guy Cam! I am sure that he is going to thank us when he is older after this photo shoot.
The setup was simple. Utilized a black background and a soft little white bear skin rug. I utilized my canon 580 EXII flash mounted onto the camera. I bounced the flash into a white reflector panel over my left shoulder. Direct flash will give you serious shadows. By doing this it almost creates the same effect as using a large to medium soft box. Could you light up a room with a flash light? No. Turn the flash light around and shine it at the white wall behind you and see what happens.

It is as simple as that.

Use of natural light - Cam

In this set of photos I just utilized the natural light to capture his sparkling baby blues. He is such a happy baby.

I utilized my 50mm F/1.4 lens for these shots.
I changed the color to a soft chocolate in Photoshop.
Almost forgot to mention that I used a higher aperature of F/2.8 to get the blur effect. I did not want to go to much higher and lose the focus of both eyes.

Tip - Aperature is how much light is allowed through the lens.
The lower the number the higher the aperature.
